Being With Country Kids Made Me Realize the Education Disparity

Education has always been an essential topic to me. In elementary, I transferred from the city to a suburban school in my neighborhood. At that time, I found out the significant disparity of education resources between cities and countries. We did not have camps, extra activities, or even any English books! Born in a wealthier family, I had a better education than my classmates. Therefore, I would participate in English competitions and spend my free time teaching my friends English. One of my friends said to me one day, "Why is your English so good? I want to be just like you.", so she did. We used English to write letters to each other and practiced English vocabulary at recess. It was at that time when I realized that it wasn't that they didn't want to learn, it was because they didn't have enough resources, and this, later on, pushes me to fight for education equality.

 

My Two Twin Sisters Developed My Mentor and Leader Characteristics

In my entire life, my two twin sisters have been the most significant impact on me. Since they were born, I have been their mentor and leader. Unlike most families, we don't spend our sibling time watching TV or playing video games; instead, it is spent learning. In my role as a teacher, I would make knowledge enjoyable since my students were barely eight years old. From English to Biology, I would make this knowledge into games.

 

I Believe Learning is Fun So I Created Educational App Games

However, ever since my sisters rose to first grade, they had difficulty remembering Mandarin vocabulary. To make learning them easy and fun for my sisters, I made learning into app games. Through the process of coding, I met many errors. After playing with my apps, my sisters achieved better grades while still having fun. With the thought of helping more children learn happily, I published my free educational apps on App Store. Astonishingly, there were more than 3000 downloads and a post on Facebook describing how much my apps helped children learn! Satisfaction and astonishment were the simplest words to describe how I felt at that time. Never have I imagined how much of an impact I could make even though I am still a child. With so much more to learn, I believe I can make a more significant impact which pushes me to delve deeper into computer science.​
